Nutmeg is one of the two species-the other being mace-derived from
several species of trees in the genus Myristica. The hills of Idukki
district of Kerala state in the Western Ghats produces best quality
Nutmeg both from forest and farms. Nutmeg is the seed of the tree while
mace is the dried lacy reddish covering or aril of the seed. It is used
for flavouring many dishes, usually in ground or grated form. The
essential oil obtained by steam distillation of ground nutmeg is used
widely in the perfumery and pharmaceutical industries. It is a prized
and costly spice in European medieval cuisine as a flavouring, medicinal
and preservative agent. It is used in various Ayurvedic medicines. Best
used in the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases and for digestion.
